Mac OS 8 should have been a completely new system (Project Copland), but due to technical difficulties, Apple settled for a re-brand of MacOS 7.7. However, Apple had created a new design system named "Platinum" for Copland, which allowed theming and came with a new default appearance, reminescent of the classic Macintosh System. This design system made its way into Mac OS 8, so it looked pretty different to Mac OS 7 while essentially being the same base system. For the desktop, Mac OS 8 offered to choose between Patterns and Pictures. In between the Patterns are a hand full of solid colors, including the somewhat iconic default "French Blue (Light)".
